At the end of the day yesterday, I did this first draft sketch of my site, based on the needs of the users and the goals of my business:
Pretty great right? Again, you don’t have to be a great drawer to call yourself a designer.
For some projects, I might continue on paper and sketch each page in slightly more fidelity at this stage. For this site however, I’m going to jump right into Sketch for the rest of my wireframes.
[6:19 pm] Actually, first I’m going to revisit that placeholder content I’ve put in there, and think about what I want my messaging to me.
One tactic I’ve used is something I picked up on Skillshare on a course for copywriting for landing pages.
This inverted triangle helps to start with the broad idea, edit it to a succinct summary, then edit it even more to a catchy tagline. Each content piece has its own purpose (the tagline isn’t the only goal).

[6:53 pm] A bit of a slog for the first draft, but at least it’s a starting point! In my wireframe, I had three “how it works” sections. But in trying to write this, I think that small businesses and startup are very similar in their goals, if they are trying to launch a new product. So I’ll change the heading a bit to let users self-select their need. This could also help me ask the right questions in the contact form.
[8:45 pm] I’m back, after a few interruptions and some productive design time, with a draft landing page. This is probably more than I would normally do for a first draft. I spend some time on colours and copy, which I don’t recommend doing if you are showing to a client to get feedback on functionality. (They will only talk about colours and copy.)
And that’s it! It’s enough for me to get started on building my landing page. I will still need the learn more pages and a contact page, but I will hopefully utilised a good WordPress template and just fill in my content.
